The Kill

“I don’t like it”, Jack said, “Is there nothing else that could be done?” “You know it’s time, Jack”, but Robin didn’t look very pleased with the decision either. Jack turned to Barry with pleading eyes. Barry refused to meet his eye. They all knew but were just trying to push the inevitable as long as possible.

Finally, Barry said the words, “It’s time to kill.” That changed the environment in the room. The uncertainty was gone. The words were said. It was now a reality. Now it was just a matter of figuring out who would perform the act. They all looked at each other. It was not the first time any of them had killed, but still, that did not make this task any easier to perform.

“I did it last time. Robin, you should be doing it now,” Barry said. “No, this is not mine, why should I do it? Jack has not done it enough. It should be him.” The argument went on for quite some time, until their Boss, Lucas, stood up. “It’s fine, guys. I will do it this time. I understand the pain.” That brought down the energy of the room substantially. It was happening.

They all gathered around Lucas. If it had to be done, it would be so much easier to get it over with as soon as possible. It’s not very often that they get so close to a project they are working on, so the call to pull it off was a sensitive one. The project wasn’t going the way it should have, and now it was time to stop it.  When Lucas finally made the call to end the project, although it was a bloodless kill, a small part of all of their hearts died when the call ended.
